- (1) The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada designates a park as an Urban-Star Park if it is an area in which artificial lighting is strictly controlled and active measures are in place to educate and promote the reduction of light pollution to the public and nearby municipalities. Sky glow from beyond the borders of the Reserve may be visible to observers within the area.

(1) The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) officially designated the Irving Nature Park in Saint John, New Brunswick an Urban Star Park on July 1, 2011. Urban Star Parks are areas without artificial lighting that obscures the public's view of the night sky. Any light fixtures in the urban star park must be well shielded and there must be public access to the park after dark. Most people in cities have never seen the stars due to the excessive use of artificial light at night (ALAN). Although cities are brightly illuminated, if local fixtures are shielded, pedestrians can still see the constellations during their evening walks. An Urban Star Park provides an area from which the stars are visible.
