The top patent applicants in 2021–2022 were: 10353744 Canada Ltd. with 220 applications, Huawei Technologies with 196 applications, Pratt & Whitney Canada with 169 applications, Halliburton Energy Services with 142 applications, Nicoventures Trading Limited with 124 applications, BASF SE with 122, The Regents of the University of California with 119 applications, Citrix Systems with 117 applications, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals with 108 applications, and Dow Global Technologies with 108 applications.

CIPO received 4,757 patent applications from Canada and 34,952 patent applications from foreign countries. Among the patent applications from Canada, 2,958 were non-Patent Cooperation Treaty applications and 1,799 were Patent Cooperation Treaty applications. Among patent applications from foreign countries, 18,153 were from the United States of America, 2,011 were from Germany, 1,962 were from China, 1,652 were from France, 1,475 were from the United Kingdom, 1,438 were from Japan, 1,349 were from Switzerland, 642 were from Italy, 573 were from Australia, and 570 were from the Netherlands.

CIPO received 2,276 International Searching Authority applications and 176 International Preliminary Examination Authority applications.

CIPO received 27,219 trademark applications from Canada and 52,589 trademark applications from foreign countries. Among trademark applications from foreign countries, 22,135 were from the United States Of America, 9,398 were from China, 2,316 were from Germany, 2,298 were from the United Kingdom, 2,027 were from France, 1,343 were from Japan, 1,341 were from Australia, 1,316 were from Switzerland, 1,158 were from Italy, and 944 were from the Republic of Korea.          

Use of the Madrid Protocol

Between April 2021 and March 2022, CIPO received 24,713 international trademark applications filed through the Madrid System. As an office of origin, CIPO certified 1,109 trademark applications for international registration.

Trademarks oppositions

610 oppositions (increase 32%)

  • 87% resolved through settlement negotiations between parties
  • 49 opposition hearings held (decrease 28%)
  • 145 opposition decisions rendered (increase 26%)

The top industrial design applicants in 2021–2022 were: Philips with 201 applications, RH with 145 applications, Harry Winston with 140 applications, Kronoplus with 130 applications, Delta Faucet with 127 applications, CITIC Dicastal with 78 applications, Ford Global Technologies with 75 applications, Shenzhen Eigate Technology with 70 applications, Walker Edison Furniture Company with 67 applications, and GM Global Technology Operations with 59 applications.

CIPO received 627 industrial design applications from Canada and 8,440 industrial design applications from foreign countries. Among the industrial design applications from foreign countries, 3,906 were from the United States of America, 830 were from China, 527 were from Switzerland, 455 were from Germany, 261 were from the United Kingdom, 258 were from the Netherlands, 243 were from Japan, 166 were from Italy, and 149 were from Malta. Note that figures for industrial design applications do not include designs filed at WIPO that have not yet been received in Canada.

Use of the Hague Agreement

Between April 2021 and March 2022, CIPO received 3,364 international industrial design applications under the Hague Agreement.
