Why

This consultation was an important step in the process of modernizing the patent system.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office sought feedback from the public on the proposed amendments to the Patent Rules (the Rules) that were published in Part I of the Canada Gazette on .

As part of the implementation of the patent term adjustment (PTA) obligation in the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the Government of Canada proposed regulatory amendments to the Patent Rules to better streamline the patent examination process, with a view to avoiding unreasonable or unnecessary delays in the granting of patents.
