We are pleased to announce that the Governor in Council has officially appointed Konstantinos Georgaras as the Commissioner of Patents, Registrar of Trademarks and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). His 5-year term is effective . Konstantinos had previously been leading CIPO as interim CEO since September 2020.
During his years at CIPO, Konstantinos has led legislative, regulatory, trade, operational and stakeholder initiatives related to the intellectual property (IP) framework. He has also been the head of Canadian delegations at the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation IP Rights Experts Group.
Konstantinos began his career in the public service in 1985 and joined Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada, one of the founding departments of Industry Canada in 1990. While there, he worked on bankruptcy and corporate law policy, and has since gained a wealth of experience in various roles within Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
Konstantinos will continue to lead CIPO in the delivery of its mandate and in transforming the organization to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
