Industrial Design Online Services – Release Notes

We strive to deliver online services that are modern, consistent with and reflective of changing legislation, practices and meet our clients' needs. We aim to implement improvements and fixes to our services to facilitate an efficient and timely online experience.

This page serves to provide information on the releases that have been implemented for each online service. As a result, for each release, you can expect to read the following information: What's New, What's Improved and What's Fixed.

Release update – February 20, 2024, at 7:00 a.m. (EST)

What's New

Amend an existing application -

  • Under the section called "Self-serve", new request types have been introduced. The new request types include:
    • Transfer
      • The information for the recordal of a transfer will be updated in real-time;
      • A confirmation advising that the request has been completed will be sent.
    • 3rd Party Transfer
      • The information is received into our system in an automated fashion and reviewed by the office;
      • A confirmation advising that the request has been received will be sent.
    • Correction to Registration
      • The requested corrections are received into our system in an automated fashion;
      • All requested corrections are identified and then reviewed by the office;
      • A confirmation advising that the request has been received will be sent electronically.

What's New

Create a new application -
Amend an existing application -

  • Design photograph(s) or graphic reproduction(s):
    • Beginning on January 1, 2024, upon filing applications, we recommend that you include a single image per page or attachment rather than combining them so as to ensure that the correct amount can be automatically calculated by the Industrial Design E-filing Application and that your application can be processed in a timely manner.

What's New

  • In the section called "Self-serve", two new transactions have been introduced. The transactions are:
    1. Request for Delay of Registration
    2. Request for Advanced Examination
      • The information will be updated in real-time;
      • A confirmation advising the request has been completed will be sent.
  • A new section called "Appoint/Revocation of agent" has been added. The new section contains two new transaction types:
    1. Appointment of an Agent –
      • When processed by the Office an appointment confirmation will be sent;

      Important: If an agent is to replace by another agent, you do not need to send a revocation of agent prior to sending the appointment of agent request. The system will revoke the current agent and appoint the new agent. The system will produce both a revocation of agent confirmation and an appointment of agent confirmation.

    2. Revocation of an Agent
      • The revocation is fully automated and will be processed in real-time;
      • A revocation confirmation will be sent.

The changes will be applied to all file numbers identified in the request.

What's New?

  • The "Industrial Design E-Filing" online service has been renamed to "Industrial Design E-Services";
  • A link to the Industrial Design E-Access, E-Mailbox, Maintenance Fees and General Correspondence online services can be accessed from within the Industrial Design E-Services;
  • New transaction types have been introduced online:
    • Agent changes of name and address
      • The changes will be applied to all applications under the identified agent/firm.
    • Under the new section called "Self-serve". The new request types include:
      • Request a refund;
      • Applicant change of name and address; (does not include transfers)
    • Upon the successful submission of an applicant change of name and address and an agent change of name and address, the following will occur automatically:
      • The information will be updated in real-time;
      • A confirmation advising the change has been completed will be sent.

What's New?

You can now respond to an office action and amend an existing industrial design application electronically. Items that can be amended include:

  • Finished article
  • Description/Statement
  • Representation
  • Amend/Withdraw a priority claim
  • Reinstatement

Notice of Publication – CIPO will now include the Notice of Publication to the e-mailbox sent to the agent electronically

What's New?

New Acknowledgment of Receipt Letter - CIPO introduced a new letter that will serve as an acknowledgement of receipt of the International Registration upon its publication on the International Designs Bulletin

What's Improved?

Statement of Grant - Registration Package - CIPO will now include the remainder of the registration package for all courtesy copies of the statement of grant sent to the agent before CIPO.

What's Improved?

  • Registration package - CIPO reviewed and streamlined the registration package hoping to increase certainty and eliminate any of the confusion created by the inclusion in the package of a copy of the application as filed.
  • Courtesy copies for international registrations - Courtesy copies of the Statement of Grant of Protection and the Notification of Refusal pertaining to an International Registration will now be sent to the agent appointed before CIPO, in addition to the International Bureau.
