Canadian IP Voices, episode 24 – How IP rights saved my business

In this latest episode of the Canadian IP Voices podcast, we focus on how entrepreneurs can protect their intellectual property (IP) and why having an IP strategy is so important. To assist in this discussion, we were joined by Johanne Boivin, a successful entrepreneur and expert advisor at Point Cardinal, a boutique firm that helps companies grow. Tune in to learn about Johanne's personal and entrepreneurial experiences protecting her IP inside the luxury fashion market, and how IP rights helped save her business. Getting started with IP – Webinar series

Starting this month, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) will begin hosting a weekly free webinar series titled "Getting started with IP." Our next live webinar on January 25, will lead a discussion around what IP is and why it's important. In this interactive presentation, you'll learn about patents, trademarks, industrial designs and copyrights, as well as how these rights are used to protect a business and how they help it grow and become more competitive. We'll also cover how to identify and manage IP and explain a few ways to avoid common IP mistakes.

As of December 30, 2022, the general term of copyright protection in Canada changed from 50 to 70 years after the death of the author. The change to the term of copyright protection will not be retroactive, meaning that it will only be extended for works that are not already in the public domain. In other words, if the copyright in a work has already expired as of December 30, 2022, the extension of the copyright term does not affect this work.

For more information, please see the amendments to the Copyright Act from June 2022.
