License agreements

This practice notice provides guidance on the recording of license agreements and replaces the practice notice of the same name published on April 24, 1996.

The Trademarks Office will record license agreements and the termination of license agreements in respect of applications for the registration of a trademark and a trademark registration. License agreements and documents terminating license agreements will be placed on file and the trademarks database will be noted accordingly. There is no fee for this service.

Note: The Trademarks Office takes no position with respect to the effect of recording license agreements and documents terminating license agreements.

Making a Request

A request to record a license agreement or the termination of a license agreement may be submitted by mail, fax, or through Trademarks eServices.
