On November 5, 2018, CIPO introduced an updated version of its Canadian Classification Standard for Industrial Designs (PDF: 167 KB; 37 pages). This new version uses the Locarno Classification System as its core framework, with additional subclasses to reflect the Canadian examination regime.
These changes will enable CIPO to conduct a comprehensive prior art search using classifications that are more aligned with international standards. CIPO's Canadian Industrial Designs Database has also been updated to reflect this classification system change.
