We are pleased to announce that beginning , intellectual property (IP) rights holders will receive a modernized certificate to represent their patents in Canada. The other Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) IP rights will follow suit with similarly designed certificates later this fall. This new certificate will replace the version that has been in place since the 1990s.
While the newly designed certificates will continue to be mailed out, the patent package will no longer be sent out with the certificates but will remain available online through the Canadian Patent Database. These changes are in line with CIPO's efforts to modernize our information technology as part of our Five-Year Business Strategy. The changes will also reduce paper usage, helping to lower the environmental impact.
