Clean Growth Hub Toolkit

The Clean Growth Hub has just launched a toolkit to help clean tech innovators and adopters apply for federal funding! It includes information about federal grants and contributions, as well as tips and links to help you apply for federal funding in support of your clean tech projects.

RBC Women in Cleantech Accelerator 2021/22 cohort

The RBC Women in Cleantech Accelerator, powered by MaRS and supported by RBC Tech for Nature, aims to help Canadian women advance their clean technology ideas into market-ready clean technology products with the potential for global impact. On September 22, 2021, MaRS and RBC announced the inaugural Women in Cleantech Accelerator cohort, 10 tech leaders embarking on a 12-month journey to develop the next generation of climate-change solutions.

The Innovation Asset Collective launches Associate Membership Tier

The Innovation Asset Collective (IAC) introduced a new Associate Membership Tier. Designed specifically for early-stage start-ups and seed companies, this membership tier is focused on helping SMEs expand their IP knowledge and strengthen their strategic position and portfolios. The Associate Membership, which is complimentary, offers funding support for IP development and access to select IAC IP education, events, market intelligence reports, and networking opportunities, all with the goal of helping these early-stage start-ups to scale-up and grow.

Draft technical guide related to the strategic assessment of climate change

The purpose of this draft technical guide is to provide proponents of projects that may require a federal impact assessment pursuant to the Impact Assessment Act (IAA) with technical guidance on quantification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (net and upstream), impact on carbon sinks, mitigation measures, and plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The closing date to submit written comments on the draft technical guide has been extended to December 3, 2021.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) will be holding both English and French webinars on the draft technical guide during the engagement period. Details on the webinars are forthcoming.

Sustainable Development Technology Canada's Annual Public Meeting: Innovation Happens Here

In case you missed it, watch Professor Dan Breznitz, Board Chair Annette Vershuren, SDTC President and CEO Leah Lawrence, and a panel of leading climate technology CEOs discuss how the public and private sector can work collectively, to put in place the support and networks needed to make Canada an Innovation Nation.

Opportunities

Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program now extended to 2023

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program has been extended to 2023 investing $30M over 6 years (2017-2023). This program funds up to 75% of eligible costs (maximum of $1M per year) for projects that assist Canada's fisheries and aquaculture industries in improving their environmental performance. The program offers funding to assist 2 types of eligible participants:

  • Commercial fisheries or aquaculture producers wishing to purchase and install existing, off-the-shelf clean technologies, processes and sustainable practices into their day-to-day operations
  • Existing aquaculture producers wishing to pilot and test new late-stage innovative technologies, systems or processes (Technology Readiness Levels 7 to 9 only)

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis:

New Brunswick Innovation Foundation – Climate Impact Fund

The New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) is excited to partner with Opportunities New Brunswick in announcing the Climate Impact Fund. This $1.5M initiative will support development of cleantech and climate change mitigation technologies as well as climate adaptation research at New Brunswick institutions. Portions of this fund will also support innovative cleantech projects at NB corporations, commercialization work for early-stage opportunities, and venture investments in cleantech startups.

Clean Technology Innovation Initiative launch

VerifiGlobal and the Standards Council of Canada recently launched the Clean Technology Innovation Initiative to raise awareness, knowledge and understanding of the need to mobilize and apply standardization to advance global sustainability.

From our partners

Energy Innovation Program – Carbon capture, utilization and storage stream

NRCan's OERD is currently reviewing Expressions of Interest for a call to support front end engineering and design studies of proposed carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) facilities in Canada. OERD was pleased with the enthusiastic response to the call, receiving 96 submissions from across Canada!

This support will position project developers to build facilities that demonstrate novel applications of CCUS technologies across the country, which will address hard-to-decarbonize segments of industrial emissions in a range of sub-sectors. This external call is the first under the $319M announced in Budget 2021 for CCUS RD&D. Future CCUS RD&D related calls under this funding are forthcoming.

The Trade Commissioner Service will be supporting Canadian companies at the following events:

Smart City Expo World Congress: Through promoting social innovation, establishing partnerships and identifying business opportunities, the event is dedicated to creating a better future for cities and their citizens.

VerdeXchange 2022 : VerdeXchange's annual conference gathers cleantech entrepreneurs, energy and water companies, advanced vehicle manufacturers, soft & hardware developers, and policymakers "under-one-roof" to assess what's in-market, about to be in-market, and what's needed in market to propel the global, trillion dollar green economy.

World Smart Energy Week (WSEW): World Smart Energy Week (WSEW) is a prominent exhibition for the renewable energy industry, serving as a key business platform for expansion in the energy industry in Japan and Asia-pacific region.

Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada (BESC) Accelerator Event 2021

In support of the Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada (BESC) program, the Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD) at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) hosted the second BESC Accelerator Session on October 13. The event featured a keynote from Meghan Bader from the Breakthrough Energy Fellowship Program. This was followed by pitches from each of the 10 BESC cohort member companies, providing them an opportunity to showcase their innovations to representatives from Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), BDC, EDC and OERD's growing network of venture capital and private equity investors.

BESC programming features a unique public-private collaboration with BEV and BDC to bring the funding, mentorship, and connections needed to support the accelerated development of high-potential innovative ventures. OERD is proud to support the BESC cohort in the shared goals of developing innovative clean energy solutions to meet Canada's climate objectives.
