Government of Canada Budget 2022 Announces Investments in Cleantech

Budget 2022 made several clean tech-related announcements, including funding for existing and new programs. As the federal focal point for clean technology, the Clean Growth Hub will update its website and newsletter with more specific details about the initiatives as they become available.

Canada advances climate action, energy security and environmental protection at G7

Over three days of meetings with their international counterparts, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, and the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson championed Canada’s international role in tackling climate change, building strong partnerships to advance energy and mineral security, and taking urgent action to protect nature and halt biodiversity loss. G7 countries have reaffirmed and strengthened commitments in these areas in a detailed communiqué.

Canada and FCM invest in community building retrofits

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources and Joanne Vanderheyden, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), announced an investment of over $3.2 million for 16 municipally led projects. This investment comes from the Green Municipal Fund’s (GMF) Community Buildings Retrofit (CBR) initiative which enables communities to undertake retrofits and other upgrades to lower emissions and improve energy performance of community buildings.

Funding announced for project to assess impacts of climate change on Traditional Territory

The Government of Canada is investing in Indigenous-led and delivered solutions to help Indigenous and northern communities adapt to the impacts of climate change in the North. The Climate Change Preparedness in the North Program supports Indigenous and northern communities and governments in increasing their capacity to adapt to climate change effects. Through community-led funding, the program helps build more climate-resilient communities across the North and Arctic.

Canada Invests in Clean Energy Hub in Quebec

The Parliamentary Secretary  to the Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance, Rachel Bendayan, on behalf of the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, announced an investment of nearly $5 million for the Institut de l’énergie Trottier at Polytechnique Montréal, and their partner organizations, the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems at University of Victoria and the School of Public Policy at University of Calgary, to establish the Energy Modelling Hub to help realize a decarbonized energy system for Canada.

Canada launches Greenhouse Gas Offset Credit System to support a clean, green economy

On June 8, 2022, the Government of Canada launched Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Offset Credit System, a key measure outlined in Canada’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan. The offset system will give municipalities, foresters, farmers, Indigenous communities, and others, a market-based incentive to undertake innovative projects that reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) by preventing emissions and removing GHGs from the atmosphere.
