The advancement of clean technologies and the transition to a clean growth economy are key priorities of the Government of Canada. In keeping with the Hub's mission to help Canadian clean tech developers and adopters identify supports for their businesses and projects, this newsletter provides the latest information on federal clean tech innovation, development and deployment.

News

Canada powers toward more clean, affordable, and reliable electricity with draft regulations

The recent announcement of the draft Clean Electricity Regulations reiterates the federal government's commitment to working closely with all provinces, territories, and partners on delivering the benefits of a clean grid in a way that ensures reliability and affordability to all Canadians. Following on the heels of the publication of Powering Canada Forward: Building a Clean, Affordable and Reliable Electricity System for Every Region of Canada, the draft regulations are designed to help Canada achieve a net-zero electricity grid by 2035 by offering provinces and territories flexibility and a technology-neutral approach to decide which technological solutions work best for them. The regulations are now open for consultation.


Government of Canada supports clean energy projects in Alberta with over $175 Million

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced funding for 12 projects across Alberta that will support the decarbonization of Canada's electricity systems. Funding for these projects was provided through the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program, which is investing up to $4.5 billion by 2035 for smart renewable energy and electrical grid modernization projects.


Greening Relocatable Temporary Camps (RTC) through IDEaS program's Pop up city Contest

The Department of National Defence's Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program hosted the final round of its Pop up city Contest on Canadian Forces Base Suffield in Alberta from August 19th to 26th. Three teams of innovators demonstrated their prototype integrated water, waste, and energy management systems for relocatable temporary military camps (RTCs) for troops. Contestants are vying for a $2 million grand prize. With this investment, the IDEaS program is creating a pathway to solutions that could reduce fuel and water consumption as well as reduce solid and liquid waste disposal by up to 33%.

Innovation Solutions Canada – Clean Technology and Climate Change

Innovative Solutions Canada's Testing Stream aims to procure, test and evaluate innovative late-stage pre-commercial prototypes. The purpose of these calls for prototypes (CFPs) is to create pools of conditionally qualified innovations that Canada may select from to address a broad range of the Government of Canada organizations' requirements. This CFP process has identified four problem statements: Energy Generation, Storage, and Infrastructure; Bio-Products, Bio-Chemicals, and Waste Reduction; Low Carbon and Zero-Emissions Mobility; Assessment, Development and Adaptation to Environmental Change.


Plastics challenge: Advancing Reuse to Replace Single-Use Plastics

Through Innovative Solutions Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada is seeking environmentally acceptable and cost-effective innovative systems or technologies to increase the adoption of reuse systems to replace single-use plastic packaging. Solution proposals can only be submitted by a small Canadian business. Proposed solutions must accelerate the adoption and/or scaling of reusable packaging solutions to displace single-use plastics; minimize environmental impact in comparison to existing reuse practices; and demonstrate convenience of use and functionality.


Canadian Battery Production Technology R&D Partnering Delegation to Germany

The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, through the Consulate of Canada in Munich and in collaboration with the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program invites Canadian companies to apply for the "Canadian Battery Production Technology R&D Partnering Delegation to Germany." The Partnership Development Activity will take place on February 19-23, 2024 in Germany. The delegation will focus on introducing Canadian small- to medium-sized enterprises to potential German partners for industrial research and development collaboration in lithium-ion battery production, primarily for automotive applications.


Cleantech in Mexico – Canadian Technology Accelerator

Mexico, with its fast-growing economy and enormous resource potential, requires significant investments in infrastructure, renewable energies, energy efficiency, water treatment and sustainable mining projects, among others. The Canadian Technology Accelerators (CTA) global business development program, offered by Canada's Trade Commissioner Service, will give companies the knowledge and connections needed to enter this market. The "Cleantech in Mexico CTA" is seeking leading-edge Canadian companies with solutions in water and wastewater; sustainable resource management; sustainable transport; energy efficiency; sustainable construction; and clean technologies for mining. Companies offering differentiated technologies in these areas are invited to learn more about the Cleantech in Mexico CTA and apply now.


Green Freight Program: Stream 2

The Green Freight Program encourages Canadian companies to make data-driven investment decisions when considering energy-efficient improvements and fuel-switching for their medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Under this program, Natural Resources Canada will provide non-repayable contributions towards fuels switching, engine repowers, and purchase of low-carbon alternative fuel. Eligible applicants can receive a maximum of 50% of project costs up to $5,000,000.


Climate-Resilient Coastal Communities Program

Natural Resources Canada's Climate-Resilient Coastal Communities Program will provide funding for up to 25 pilot projects that accelerate adaptation at a regional scale through integrated, inclusive, and innovative actions. The projects will advance systems-based approaches and will involve governments, Indigenous rights–holders, communities and organizations, businesses, academia, and other stakeholders to address key climate change risks. Up to a total of $30 million in contribution funding may be awarded for pilot projects starting April 1, 2024, and concluding on or before December 31, 2027.


NRCan Funding for Indigenous-led Awareness and Education Projects for Cleaner Transportation and Clean Fuels

Natural Resources Canada is offering funding to support Indigenous-led projects that aim to increase awareness, knowledge, and public confidence in: zero-emission vehicles in all vehicle classes, including micro-mobility such as e-bikes; low-emitting medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (trucks, delivery vans) including retrofits, repowers, and conversions; and public charging and refuelling technologies.


AgriScience Program – Project Stream Intake Period Open

The AgriScience Program, under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), aims to accelerate innovation by providing funding and support for pre-commercial science activities and research that benefits the agriculture and agri-food sector and Canadians. Assistance is available in the form of non-repayable contributions and/or collaborative support from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada research scientists. Eligible activities range from applied research and development to technology and knowledge transfer. The 3 priority areas of the program are: Climate change and environment; Economic growth and development, and; Sector resilience and societal challenges.

Events

Hannover Messe Roadshow

Hannover Messe is an annual global showcase in Germany for international industrial transformation, featuring close to 4,000 exhibitors and 130,000 visitors from over 150 countries. Event themes include energy transition (including hydrogen and fuel cells), environmental technologies, and more. In the lead-up to this event, the Trade Commissioner Service and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, in partnership with Next Generation Manufacturing Canada, are hosting a cross-Canada recruitment roadshow in October 2023. Canadian exhibitors will be featured within the Canada Pavilion in both 2024 and 2025, while non-exhibiting attendees will have opportunities to explore the vast trade show floor.


Electricity Transformation Canada 

Electricity Transformation Canada is Canada's largest renewable energy and storage industry conference and exhibition, bringing together all the key players from wind energy, solar energy, energy storage, complementary technologies, and other stakeholders to network and collaborate.


Energy Innovation Forum

The Energy Innovation Forum will introduce attendees to industry experts, discuss emerging trends, offer training sessions, showcase results from national pilot projects and present a diverse range of initiatives and research that will propel Canada's decentralized low-carbon energy sector. The event will offer tours to two locations tackling smart grid development.


First Nations Energy Summit

Join clean energy industry professionals, project developers, operators, policy designers, innovators, First Nations clean energy leaders, political leaders, academics and students for the First Nations Energy Summit. This two-day conference and trade show features exhibitor displays, plenary sessions on cutting-edge topics, a keynote luncheon, and networking opportunities with the industry's top experts on a trade show floor.


Scaling Up Conference and Trade Commissioner Service Side Event

Scaling Up 2023 is Canada's industrial bioeconomy business conference, convening industry, government, environmental groups, businesses, research organisations and technology providers in the forestry bioeconomy, biomass, biochemical and bio-material sectors. The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service in Spain is organizing a "Meet the Trade Commissioner" session on November 6, followed by business-to-business activities. The objective of these sessions is to create partnerships for the development of innovative, cross-border and cross-sectoral industrial value chains in the bioeconomy with Spanish investors gathered at the event.


WBE Canada National Conference

The WBE Canada National Conference brings together over 400 certified Canadian Women Business Enterprises (WBEs), corporations and government procurement professionals and those championing supplier diversity. This event offers networking, training and promotional opportunities for women-owned businesses, partners of WBE Canada and organizations seeking to demonstrate their diversity commitment or expand their reach in new markets.


MaRS Climate Impact

MaRS Climate Impact delves into the most promising ideas and innovations that could help prevent the most disastrous consequences of climate change and build a cleaner economy. EDC Cleantech Export Week

Export Development Canada (EDC) is hosting its seventh annual Cleantech Export Week in Ottawa (October 30, 2023) and live streaming internationally. For the first time, the week will include in-person events in Toronto (November 1, 2023), Montreal (November 2, 2023), and Vancouver (November 6, 2023).
