- Employment in the cleantech sector has yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels, despite rising 7.2% from the previous year and reaching 188,794 in 2021. Over the same period, the total number of jobs in Canada increased 8.5%.
- In 2021, 88% of Canadian cleantech jobs were located in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta, a similar distribution to overall Canadian employment levels.
- Quebec was the only province whose 2021 cleantech employment levels bounced back to above pre-pandemic levels.
- Cleantech jobs in the manufacturing industry recovered to above pre-pandemic levels, growing 11% in 2021.
- Those in the professional, scientific and technical services industry have yet to regain all the jobs lost in 2020. Despite rising over 6% this past year, this segment is still 8 % lower than 2019 level.
- Average annual wages in the cleantech sector continued to climb throughout the pandemic, reaching $89,598 in 2021.
- Wages in territories are notably higher than that in the provinces. Among the provinces, Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest wages in 2021 ($106,469), followed by British Columbia ($94,120).
