How much are Canadian businesses spending on environmental protection activities?
In 2021, Canadian businesses invested $26.6 billion in environmental protection, marking an increase of over 30% from 2019. The capital and operating expenditures consist of two broad categories - resource management activities to reduce the intensity of natural resource use and mitigating environmental impacts and expenditures on environmental protection activities, involving preventing, reducing, or eliminating pollution and addressing environmental degradation. Resource management activities accounted for 60.2% of the total expenditures, while environmental protection activities made up 39.8% of the expenditures – underscoring the commitment of Canadian businesses to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
