Retail Grocery Market Study


On October 24, the Bureau launched a market study of grocery store competition in Canada. The objective of the study is to explore how governments across Canada can act to promote greater competition in the grocery sector. More competition can lead to lower prices, more convenience, and more innovation.

A complete market study notice, including the scope of the study, was issued on October 24, 2022.

During the study, the Bureau will engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including: grocery retailers of all sizes, industry experts and all levels of government.

The Bureau also invited Canadians to provide written or oral submissions on the questions identified in the market study notice or any other matters relevant to retail grocery competition in Canada. The deadline for public submissions is December 16, 2022.

The Bureau expects to publish a report with its findings in June 2023. The report will include recommendations to relevant government authorities, including measures they can take to help to improve competition in the grocery sector.
