Public Awareness Working Group – Mandate

The Public Awareness Working Group (the Working Group) provides recommendations to the Government of Canada Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence (the Advisory Council). The Working Group examines avenues to boost public awareness and foster trust in AI in order to better ground the Canadian discourse in a measured understanding of the technology, its potential uses, and its associated risks.

Over the course of 2021, the Working Group led a pan-Canadian series of workshops that engaged the Canadian public in a dialogue to identify the opportunities and risks of deploying AI technologies, exploring issues such as responsible use, ethical principles, human rights, data protection, and adapting to increase automation. Informed by these consultations, the Working Group provided a report to the AI Advisory Council on their engagement activities, along with recommendations to support sustained public awareness on AI. The full report containing the Working Group's findings and recommendations will be published in the winter of 2022.
