You might think that an information technology (IT) company wouldn't need any cybersecurity help. After all, it's a key part of what they do. Why then would an IT company decide to go through the process of getting CyberSecure Canada certified? We sat down with EC Managed IT to find out.
About EC Managed IT
EC Managed IT is an IT support company that has been providing IT services to organizations of all sizes for over 30 years. It supports back-end IT projects and co-manages IT systems and networks, and has offices across Canada.
"The risks are too great not to have good cybersecurity practices. For most businesses, just one incident can be catastrophic."
Cybersecurity – beyond the buzzword
The decision to pursue CyberSecure certification came right from the top. Chief Executive Officer Stacey Jamison is a big believer in cybersecurity. "Cybersecurity is a bit of a buzzword, but we wanted to take it beyond the buzzword. We didn't want to just use this word that sounded important—we wanted our entire business to be fundamentally strong so we could help other companies do the same."
Since their employees tend to know a lot about cybersecurity, there is an assumption that IT companies must have strong security practices in place. But that isn't always the case. Going through a process like CyberSecure Canada certification helped EC Managed IT ensure that they are practising what they preach and helps build trust with their clients. "Now I'm confident that we are a cybersecure company," Stacey told us. "I can't say I was confident about that three years ago."
Stacey encourages all Canadian businesses to go through the process to get certified. "The risks are too great not to have good cybersecurity practices. For most businesses, just one incident can be catastrophic."
