Meet northern Ontario’s first CyberSecure certified company: Timmins Mechanical Solutions

When Eddy Lamontagne, Vice President of Timmins Mechanical Solutions, first heard about cybersecurity, he didn’t take it too seriously. “At first I thought it was a big laugh. Secure? Let’s just hire a security guard and put them at the door.”

It wasn’t long before Eddy came to understand exactly what was at stake if cyber criminals were to get into his company’s system. Fast forward to January 2022, when Timmins Mechanical Solutions became the first company in northern Ontario to become CyberSecure certified.

About the company

Timmins Mechanical Solutions was formed in 2013 in Timmins, Ontario. It provides services to repair heavy equipment off road and sells equipment and machinery. Since its inception, the company has grown to 44 employees.

“We never stand still. We’re always looking forward to new things—better things. And this certification was really worth it.”

CyberSecure certification – a real value added

The primary appeal of getting CyberSecure certified for most businesses is increased protection from cyber attacks. Eddy personally knows some neighbouring businesses that have experienced cyber attacks, and he’s very glad that Timmins Mechanical Solutions took a proactive approach before something similar could happen to them. “We never stand still. We’re always looking forward to new things—better things. And this certification was really worth it.”

However, for a small to medium-sized business, there are other benefits to certification beyond upping cybersecurity practices. Being CyberSecure certified means Timmins Mechanical Solutions gets more work. Potential clients see that they are serious about cybersecurity and trust that their information will be secure when they work together. It’s a real value added.

That’s why Timmins Mechanical Solutions will seek re-certification in two years once their certification is up for renewal. And as for Eddy, he encourages any companies that are considering certification to get it as soon as possible. “There’s people helping you so you’re not alone.”
