The Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy released in 2022 aims to increase the supply of responsibly sourced critical minerals and support the development of domestic and global value chains for the green and digital economy.
Critical minerals are used in a wide range of essential products, from smart phones to solar panels, and from electric vehicle batteries to medical and healthcare applications.
With Northern Ontario's vast mineral wealth, FedNor is supporting regional development projects to help build up the critical minerals supply chain, create sustainable jobs, strengthen the economy, promote climate action and environmental protection, and advance the Government of Canada's commitment to net-zero emissions and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
For example, FedNor support has helped establish a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Lab to test BEV-related products and acquire mining equipment powered by batteries and electric motors to allow for the development, testing and demonstration of BEV products.
