Canadian Genomics Strategy

The Government of Canada would like to thank everyone who joined the conversation on advancing the commercialization and adoption of genomics technologies and innovations in Canada.

The Canadian Genomics Strategy Secretariat has reviewed the comments received and has released a "What We Heard" report.

Insights gathered during the consultations are helping shape the Canadian Genomics Strategy, which is under development.

Background

Genomics is the science that aims to decipher and understand the entire genetic information of an organism encoded in DNA and related molecules. Advancements in genomics research have led to the development of cutting-edge technologies and innovations applicable across a number of sectors, including public health, food and natural resources.

Genomics is helping to advance precision health, improve the productivity and resiliency of forests, crops and livestock, create more sustainable energy and biomaterials, bioremediate contaminated sites and protect the environment. Most notably, genomics research has played an important role in Canada's ability to track and fight COVID‑19.

Advancing a Canadian Genomics Strategy

In recognition of Canada's world-class strength in genomics research, Budget 2021 announced the creation of a Canadian Genomics Strategy. The Strategy aims to drive further innovation in genomics through commercialization and adoption, create socioeconomic growth and cement Canada's position as a world-leader in research and innovation.

To do this, the following proposed priority themes have been identified for the Strategy:

  • Canada's genomics landscape - opportunities and challenges;
  • Attracting, developing and retaining talent;
  • Management, standardization and use of genomics data;
  • Commercialization and use of Canadian genomics technology and innovations; and
  • Adoption of genomics in key sectors: healthcare, environment, clean tech, food and natural resources.

This inclusive national strategy will outline Canada's approach to supporting the commercialization and adoption of genomic technologies and innovations across sectors and regions. It will help position Canada as a leader in genomics and ensure its long-term success in the global bioeconomy, leading to increased socioeconomic and environmental benefits for Canadians.
