Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) funding for the Mobilisateur II program has enabled Premier Tech to develop brand-new technology platforms that should ensure unprecedented growth and expertise in the various markets where the company is present. That is a major asset for the future of Premier Tech.

Jean Bélanger, PEng,
President and Chief Operating Officer, Premier Tech

For 85 years now, Canadian company Premier Tech has been building its know-how and reputation on the various technology-oriented opportunities offered by sphagnum peat moss, an abundant natural resource in Canada. The mission of its seven business units, divided into three groups—Horticulture and Agriculture, Industrial Equipment, and Environmental Technologies—is to become a technological and commercial leader in their respective fields.

All of Premier Tech's industrial activities relate either directly or indirectly to sphagnum peat moss. Premier Tech is one of the top three producers of peat moss products in the world. What makes this company unique is that it sells some of its systems to its competition, such that the success of its competitors is a measure of its own success.

Premier Tech is a world leader in industrial flexible packaging. Whether for fibrous, organic, food or chemical products, Premier Tech uses its vast knowledge of the horticultural industry to develop its packaging systems.

In 2002, Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) invested $9.9 million in Premier Tech's R&D project Mobilisateur II, the objective of which is to make improvements to wastewater treatment systems, plant growth enhancers, mobile and fixed waste screening systems, and materials handling and packaging systems. The program resulted in the development of 55 new products.

Several of the results of Mobilisateur II are being investigated further through ESSOR, Premier Tech's latest R&D effort, launched in November 2006.

With a multidisciplinary team of over 1,600 employees throughout North America, Europe and Asia, Premier Tech builds on the professional development of its employees, innovation, R&D and the introduction of value-added products. Premier Tech's international headquarters is located in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, making it one of the region's largest employers.

About Sphagnum Peat Moss

Premier Tech is an expert in the area of sphagnum peat moss. It specializes in peat moss packaging, screening and handling, and has developed onsite wastewater treatment technologies using this resource. Through its innovative use of this product, it has provided many Canadians with safe, environmentally-friendly water filtration systems.

Premier Tech is keenly aware of the environmental impact of sphagnum peat moss harvesting and works with Environment Canada to develop innovative technologies to ensure that vegetation and water levels remain consistent in sphagnum peat moss harvesting areas.

To avoid the adverse effects of a rainy season, Premier Tech is developing new equipment for harvesting peat bogs and diversifying its production in various provinces of Canada. That way, if one part of Canada experiences a particularly rainy season, Premier Tech can focus on harvesting in another part of the country. Since sphagnum peat moss is Premier Tech's main product, diversification virtually eliminates the risk of it losing an entire harvest.
