About the organization
The Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) is a National Indigenous Organization. They represent the political voice of Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people in Canada. This includes First Nations on and off reserve, status and non-status, disenfranchised, Métis and Inuit.
How the grant helped them
NWAC studied Indigenous intellectual property issues in Canada from a gendered perspective. Their report examines how intellectual property impacts women, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse artisans and entrepreneurs.
The impact
The report provides an overview of the gaps in Canada's intellectual property system from a gender-based lens. It identified key barriers and gaps concerning the intellectual property rights of Indigenous Peoples. NWAC compiled a summary of the research findings and proposed future directions to guide their engagement with Elders, Indigenous artisans, and entrepreneurs.
