Strategic Intellectual Property Program Review

This consultation ran from March 23, 2023, to May 14, 2023, and is now closed.

Background

The Strategic Intellectual Property Program Review was first announced in Budget 2021, with further support from Budget 2022. This review is examining Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada’s (ISED) innovation and science programs through an intellectual property lens. It is looking at ways to further develop and commercialize Canadian intellectual property and help Canadians benefit from it.

Consultation purpose

For the purpose of this review, ISED hosted focus groups with experts and program beneficiaries in November 2022.

On March 23, 2023, ISED invited members of the public to provide their feedback through an online questionnaire to find out how the department could better address the intellectual property needs of Canadians and offer support through its programs.

Examples of programs falling within the scope of this consultation include, but are not limited to, the Strategic Innovation Fund, Innovative Solutions Canada, Global Innovation Clusters, Mitacs, Sustainable Development Technology Canada, the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada programs, such as Alliance grants.

Canadian post-secondary and research institutions, business owners and advisors, researchers, intellectual property professionals and interested members of the public were welcome to share their views.
