Consultation on the modernization of the Weights and Measures Act and the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act

Measurement Canada invites comments on the modernization of the Weights and Measures Act and the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act. As an agency of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Measurement Canada seeks to continue to excel as a world-class regulator that enables innovation and ensures a fair and competitive marketplace for Canadians and Canadian businesses. The legislative proposals aim to reduce barriers for business, protect consumers and help ensure that services are delivered effectively.

Trade measurement plays a crucial role in the Canadian economy, impacting virtually all major industry sectors, including fishing, forestry, grain and field crops, petroleum, retail food, livestock, electricity, gas and many others. Although the laws governing trade measurement have served Canadians and Canadian businesses well for some time, they have not changed significantly in more than 40 years, and the gap between the legislative framework and innovation and fair competition continues to widen.

Through this consultation, we want to hear from Canadian businesses, authorized service providers, non-governmental organizations, civil society groups and members of the public.

We invite you to review our legislative visioning paper entitled Moving towards a more flexible and agile legislative framework for trade measurement and send your written comments to mcfeedback-retroactionmc@ised-isde.gc.ca with "Legislative Visioning Paper" as the subject line.

This consultation will close on March 8, 2023.
