Amendments to the schedules of the Weights and Measures Act

Measurement Canada announces the registration of amendments to Schedules I—Units Based on the International System of Units and to Schedule IV—Reference Standards of the Weights and Measures Act.

These changes do not have any impact on device examinations.

Units of measurement classification

The Act defines and categorizes the units of measurement that can be used for legal trade transactions in Canada. In this amendment, the classification of the units of measurement in Schedule I of the Act is adjusted to match that of the International System of Units (SI) and other widely recognized national and international bodies.

  • The units impacted are the radian and steradian.
  • They are reclassified from supplementary units to derived units of measurement.

Electricity reference standards

The Act lists the reference standards used by Measurement Canada to determine the accuracy of local standards as well as standards used by inspectors under the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act. Therefore, the standards listed in Schedule IV of the Weights and Measures Act must correspond to those that are currently in use.

  • Two reference standards for the measurement of electricity were removed and six were added.
