"Buy now, pay later": A review of risks and remedies

Option Consommateurs (OC) will undertake a study of "buy now, pay later" (BNPL)- services. OC notes that this type of credit was traditionally used for high-value purchases, such as appliances, and require a longer application process. However, with technological innovation and the rise of online sales, there has been a surge of BNPL services. The proposed research aligns with the areas of focus such as financial literacy and access for vulnerable populations or populations who lack of access to financial services. The study will provide a better understanding of BNPL impacts on vulnerable consumer groups.

Criticism toward businesses through social media and digital platforms: an alternative pathway to justice for consumers

This study will explore the relatively new, and steadily growing, practice of online consumer reviews and complaints. It will identify ways to educate consumers about the potential impacts regarding the laws, rights and risks surrounding potential lawsuits [and financial retribution] filed against consumers.

Planning for the unexpected: consumer compensation measures for catastrophic events
The research study will examine consumer protection issues occurring due to the pandemic, such as businesses in various sectors like the travel, hospitality, fitness, and entertainment industries, that were unable to fulfill their contractual obligations and/or attempted to provide alternative solutions in order to remedy the situation.
