Where else but in Marc Gobeil's unique classroom can you learn cutting edge design skills and take home a custom built guitar by the end of the semester? Those are sounds of success coming from this teacher's classroom, where digital design meets physical craftsmanship.
Gobeil has combined digital and computer aided design with woodworking and craftsmanship. Students can work through a problem with another classmate, learn from a traditional lesson, or be inspired from Gobeil's expertly crafted videos.
- Gobeil has taken a Practical and Applied Arts (PAA) class and turned it into a makerspace that allows students to engage in technology design and hands-on experiences that has them ultimately making a full-fledged guitar.
- Gobeil's creative teaching techniques with Indigenous youth have inspired visits from Prime Minister Trudeau. To prepare for the Prime Minister's visit, students used their skills to make him a custom guitar.
- Gobeil has authored multi-touch digital books that are available for download by anyone in the world who wants to start a makerspace with students.
"It is awesome that [Gobeil] had the knowledge and passion to create a class like this. When you have these opportunities that make you proud of yourself, it really builds your character."
"In the work we have engaged in together, [Gobeil] is a leader. His concern for colleagues and learners is unparalleled. He is a creator of community; that elusive artifact that all teachers and educational leaders hope will develop in their worlds."
