For Jean-Philippe Payer, the teacher's role is that of a guide, someone who knows the content and paths and leads the students to make their own discoveries.

principal

Jean-Philippe Payer exhibits endless creativity and dedication. For 29 years, he has endlessly reinvented his teaching methods and come up with a multitude of projects. With him, the students have experiences that greatly exceed the mere school context. They learn to craft their own learning and by the same token, their own lives.

Pedagogical approach

Teaching through projects and digital platforms are the basis of Jean-Philippe's approach in class. Through student-centred active learning, the student becomes the driving force behind his or her own learning. This contributes to student motivation, engagement, attendance and success.

In class

  • In addition to Google Classroom, Jean-Philippe uses an internet platform for interactive activities that supplement his teaching (exercises, projects, etc.) thus providing the students every means to succeed.
  • Jean-Philippe started a Class-Museum project for which the students have to use technology to create audio-visual content related to a segment of history that is displayed on a large border in the classroom;
  • Jean-Philippe promotes his students' use of ICTs in their research so that they develop their skills in summarizing, selection and fact-checking.
  • He teaches his students to use Google Drive to teach them to work in an environment of sharing and cooperation.

Outstanding achievements

  • As part of the Class-Museum, Jean-Philippe formed a partnership with a school in the Huron-Wendat community to create ties between the students of both communities and give more room to Indigenous history.
  • As coach of the school's hockey team, he is able to form a special relationship with the students and help increase their feeling of belonging to the school.
  • Jean-Philippe included intellectually challenged students in the Class-Museum project which enabled them to acquire woodworking skills and experience a sense of belonging.
  • He is a recipient of the Ken Spencer Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning in Canada and the prestigious 2019 Governor General's History Award.
