“My children look up to him, he’s their role model and they don’t want to disappoint him in any way! As a parent, this says a lot about a teacher but more so an individual that spends a lot of time with them throughout the day. His positive energy is passed on the children, which I believe sets the tone for an amazing classroom!”.

Teaching Approach

Joseph is a great mentor, coach, motivator, and supporter, as he challenges students to optimize their potential, convincing them that they can do anything they set their minds to. He believes in them before they believe in themselves. Joseph gives them a reason to come to school feeling happy. The entirety of his work revolves around building leaders and instilling a passion for learning. He does this by always putting the interests of the students first. This value, intrinsic to his nature, is recognized and appreciated not only by the students but also by staff and parents.

In the Classroom

Physical Education is a subject in which a great deal of visual learning takes place. Joseph finds ways to bring unique value to his lessons. His lesson plans include videos of himself demonstrating and performing skills. He also films the students’ progress. With video delay to view techniques from their games, he can evaluate students’ performance; highlight their strengths, point out areas of which they can improve, and how they can build upon their skills. This provides students with hands-on learning and build important social skills such as cooperation, team building, and sportsmanship.

Joseph is a passionate advocate for our special needs students at John Caboto Academy. He finds fun and innovating ways to keep them engaged while accommodating their needs. Students in specialized classrooms have a variety of special needs ranging from global development delays, autism and other intellectual difficulties. Some struggle with staying on task, following directions, and processing information. It can be challenging to keep them engaged and stimulated for a long period of time. Joseph spends hours researching approaches and methods to help students improve their ability to understand and process information. His success is remarkable. Students flourish because he is giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through their actions.

Outstanding Achievements

Joseph distinguishes himself by his tireless work outside the classroom to provide students with the most opportunities to develop and learn by doing. For instance, he started a nutrition project with the grade 4, 5 and 6 students with a donation from a hydroponic company. This initiative played a pivotal role in helping our students make healthier food choices, understand nutritional value, and gain a better understanding of how our actions can make an impact on our environment. They are learning about the impact of food waste, how food gets imported, and the importance of practicing sustainability while planting their own seeds. Another example - Joseph received a donation of 6 bicycles and 6 helmets to jumpstart his cycling program. This initiative was teaching students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and specialized classroom how to ride a bike. This program continues and it encourages many parents to purchase bicycles for their children in order for them to cycle at home.
