Subject: Government's Consultation copyright term

To Whom It May Concern:

Please accept this note as support for the Canadian Copyright Institute's response to the Government's Consultation on how to implement the extension of the general term of copyright protection from 50 to 70 years measured from the end of the author's death.

Delay in implementation of the extended term until the end of December 2022 would mean that Canadian works will continue to be in the public domain during the last 20 years of copyright protection in some countries outside of Canada, and that Canadian rights holders will not get the 20-year extension.

Immediate implementation of the required extension of the term of copyright would respect both the moral and economic interests of those who bring literary and artistic works into the world. This will align the term of protection in Canada with the United States and the European Union.

Thank you in advance of consideration of the response submitted.

Respectfully,
Carol Holmes
