In accordance with the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals (2010), a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Preliminary Scan was conducted for the contribution to Bombardier Inc. under the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI) program of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada's Industrial Technologies Office.
The SADI contribution will likely have important positive environmental effects as Bombardier Inc. develops aircraft platforms such as Global 7000 that are designed to meet or exceed industry standards for International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in terms of noise and engine emissionsFootnote 1. The new engine and the new high-speed transonic wing will offer excellent short-field and high-speed performance to cut down drag, reduce fuel burn, and lower emissions. Furthermore, Bombardier has committed to release for the first time ever an Environmental Product Declaration in the business aircraft segment, so that environmental impacts will be assessed throughout the entire life cycle of the product and then communicated to the public at large for more transparencyFootnote 2. All this means that it will help meet at least two goals of the 2016-2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS), namely: effective action on climate change—reducing Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (FSDS Goal 1) and helping clean growth by lowering fuel consumption, lowering emissions and reducing noise (FSDS Goal 3).
