Business Innovation and Growth

This program component is open to incorporated, for-profit entities looking to undertake projects that encourage research and development (R&D) activities to accelerate technology transfer and commercialization, facilitate the growth and expansion of Canadian firms and/or attract and retain large-scale investments to Canada.

Small, medium and large firms, across all of Canada's industrial and technology sectors are eligible to apply for projects costing more than $20 million, with a contribution request of no less than $10 million.

Projects requesting a contribution of more than $100 million, or projects related to Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences must receive a consultation prior to application.

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and there are no deadlines to submit a Statement of Interest (SOI).

You will be required to include detailed information on the SOI form to:

  • Provide a thorough understanding of the company, the proposed project's activities, objectives and outcomes.
  • Demonstrate the management, technical and financial capacity to complete the project.

How to apply

  1. Check your eligibility by completing the SIF self-screening questionnaire.

  2. If your project meets the SIF eligibility requirements, you will be given the opportunity to complete a Statement of Interest or to consult with us.
  3. Once you apply, your project will be assessed for consideration. A Strategic Innovation Fund officer will be in contact to update you on the status of your application.

Eligible projects are not guaranteed to receive an investment from SIF.

SIF is currently focusing on innovative projects that meet the SIF eligibility requirements and directly support one of our current investment priority areas.

Completing the SIF Statement of Interest application:

The SOI (Streams 1–3) has two parts, which will be sent to you by email. One of these is a PDF form, and the other is a form in Microsoft Excel. Both of these forms must be completed and submitted to SIF simultaneously. Please ensure consistency across both forms. For example, your company name, your CRA Business Number and your project start and end date should be the same in both forms.

SOI — Part I (the PDF form)

  • The PDF form provides general information on the applicant and the project. It serves as a covering sheet, a sign-off and attestation and allows for attachments to be sent, via secure transmission, to SIF.
    • Using the 'Add attachments' button at the top of this form, you must add the following attachments prior to submitting:
      • The completed "SIF Statement of Interest — Part II" Excel Form
      • Your articles of incorporation, or alternative documentation detailing your legal status / the legal status of the applicant
      • A diagram of your corporate structure, including all related entities
      • Your annual financial statements, preferably audited, for the past 3 years, and if applicable those of your ultimate parent company (follow guidance provided on the PDF if you have been in operation for fewer than 3 years)
  • The SOI - Part I also asks for the project Technology Readiness Level at the beginning and completion of the project, and for the applicant to identify the most relevant Economic Strategy Table for the project.

SOI — Part II (the MS Excel form)

  • The Microsoft Excel form gathers detailed information about your company and the project proposal in order to assess your application.
  • In this form, you will be asked to provide detailed descriptions of your business activities and aspects of your proposed project including, objectives, benefits and timelines.
  • In addition, you will be required to provide key data points related to employment, revenues, R&D expenditures, previous funding, project location(s), project costs and financing.
  • The information provided on this form will be used to assess your application.
  • When completing this form, guidance and definitions on each field are provided within the form in the Guidance and Definitions tab; please use these as reference to ensure that the information provided meets SIF requirements.
  • Part II must be attached to Part I when completed.

Submitting the Statement of Interest

Once the SOI Part I and Part II have been completed, please:

  • Use the attachment button at the top of SOI Part I to attach Part II to the form
  • Use the attachment button at the top of SOI Part I to also attach:
    • The applicant's articles of incorporation,
    • Diagram of the applicant's corporate structure, and
    • The applicant's financial statement for the past three years
  • Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the SOI Part I form to securely transmit your information to SIF.
