Based in Saint John, New Brunswick, SHIFT Energy a division of Mariner Partners, is using an energy intelligence platform powered by machine learning to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions from HVAC systems in hospitals, campuses, office towers, and other large facilities across North America. Using advanced machine learning, SHIFT’s Energy Optimization Software (EOS™) delivers up to a 20% reduction in energy consumption by optimizing the performance of HVAC systems without costly equipment replacements. With building operations accounting for nearly 30% of global carbon emissions, SHIFT Energy is targeting energy consumption at the source to create a cleaner, greener, future.
The Challenge: Gaining trust, support, and market adoption for an emerging technology
Before joining the Accelerated Growth Service (AGS), SHIFT Energy had an innovative product with the potential to make a huge environmental impact. But, as an emerging company introducing unfamiliar technology to the market, they needed support finding the right partners to back it. With so many programs available, knowing where to focus their time was critical in moving their project forward. Their Innovation Advisor understood their business and had the insight, contacts, and knowledge to get them the support they needed - saving valuable time and money while fast-tracking their growth.
With support from AGS, SHIFT Energy engaged several government agencies that provided the instant credibility and recognition they needed to reach large-scale clients. Through partner financing, the company had an opportunity to offer free trials of their EOS™ solution to hospitals, office towers, retail centers, and event venues across Canada. These trials demonstrated the immediate environmental and financial impact of SHIFT Energy’s technology. As a result, the company secured several multi-year, multi-location deals including a Canadian-based real estate company implementing the SHIFT technology in nearly 10 million square feet of office and retail space across Toronto. Growing fast, SHIFT Energy is on track to achieving a cumulative global Greenhouse Gas Emissions reduction of nearly 320 kilotons of CO2e from 2020-2029.

With funding provided by Working NB, SHIFT Energy invested in additional training procedures to familiarize new clients with the technology, improve the integration process, and maximize results.
Support for research and development
Continuous support from NRC-IRAP throughout the commercialization process allowed SHIFT Energy to implement changes to their product and respond to emerging market demands in real-time.
Support for commercial validation
To create more proof points in the market, SHIFT Energy used financing from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) and Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to offer free trials of their Energy Optimization Software to organizations across Canada.
