This element contains all the information on a patent.

"lang" contains the language of the publication.

"kind" contains the kind code according to WIPO Standard ST.16. See the Kind Code element for the code descriptions.

"doc-number" contains the number assigned to the patent (Patent number).

"status" contains the code indicating the current processing state of the Patent/Application. See Appendix B

"dtd-version" contains the document type dictionary version. For clients performing bulk processing of CIPO's ST.36 Patent XML files - either transformation or validation - the public Document Type Definition http://patents.ic.gc.ca/cipo/dtd/ca-patent-document-v2-0.dtd should be downloaded and added to their local XML Entity Catalog. Doing so will avoid an inordinate number of HTTP Get requests for the DTD and the possibility of being refused access to CIPO's web site as a potential denial-of-service threat.

"country" contains the country code (WIPO ST.3) of the publication country (Canada).

1. Old Act patents are numbered consecutively based grant date starting from #1 in 1868

3. Not all New Act application numbers will be present in this file as some applications are withdrawn prior to being laid-open. (43);
4. The Canadian Patent Office does not have separate publication numbers with publication dates. Canadian patent specifications use the patent number, and Document type codes (WIPO ST.16) with the appropriate date.

This element contains the Section Symbol of the International Patent Classification (IPC). Each section is designated by one of the capital letters A through H.

The Section Title linked to the Section Symbol is a very broad description of the contents of the section. The following are the titles for the eight sections:

This element contains the Subclass Symbol of the International Patent Classification (IPC).

Subclasses are a subdivision of the Classes and each have a Subclass Title (Ex: G06Q Data processing systems or methods, specially adapted for administrative, commercial, financial, managerial, supervisory or forecasting purposes; systems or methods specially adapted for administrative, commercial, financial, managerial, supervisory or forecasting purposes, not otherwise provided for [8]).

This element contains the Main Group Symbol of the International Patent Classification (IPC).

The Group Symbol is a subdivision of the Subclass. The Main Group Symbol is the first one to three digits that appear before the oblique stroke of the Group Symbol. Each Main Group Symbol has a Main Group Title (EX: G06Q 30/00 Commerce, e.g. shopping or e-commerce [2012.01])

This element contains the Subgroup Symbol of the International Patent Classification (IPC).

The Group Symbol is a subdivision of the Subclass. The Subgroup Symbol is the last two to three digits that appear after the oblique stroke of the Group Symbol. Each Subgroup Symbol has a Subgroup Title (EX: G06Q 30/06 Buying, selling or leasing transactions [2012.01])

This element contains the position of the first invention information classification.

The value can be first or later (F or L).

This element contains the classification value indicator to differentiate between invention information and other information.

The value can be:

• I – Invention
• N - Additional/Non-invention

This element contains the value of the date on which the classification was assigned.

Dates are in the following format: YYYMMDD.

This element contains the indication of the different types of data.

The value can be:

• B - Basic or original data
• R - Reclassified data
• V - Various incidental changes
• D - Data to be deleted

This element contains the identifier of the source of the classification data.

The value can be:

• H – Human generated data/Intellectual classification by persons.
• M - Machine classification by the propagation of earlier intellectual classification through the use of common priorities in the patent application.
• G - Generated by software using automatic analysis of the content of the patent document.

This element contains the Canadian Patent Classification (CPC). This system was used by Canada prior to October 1989 to classify inventions. Each application is assigned a main (primary) classification and can also be assigned multiple secondary classifications. The classification will be in the format:

eg. 20/230 : 20 is the class, 230 is the subclass
