Crocus Co-op, based in Saskatoon, is a unique co-operative offering essential services to support individuals living with mental health challenges. Founded in 1983, this member-led, non-profit organization provides a safe environment where individuals can find support, understanding and opportunities to thrive.
More than just a drop-in centre, Crocus fosters an environment of mutual support and empowerment. Members can participate in various programs, enjoy affordable meals and access casual employment opportunities through the Transitional Employment Program. This initiative helps them build skills, gain confidence and maintain some financial stability in a flexible and supportive environment.
Crocus also plays a key role in reducing hospitalizations and relapses by providing consistent social support and meaningful activities. Every day, over 100 people walk through its doors, reflecting the co-operative's importance to community resilience and the well-being of its members.
Beyond its direct impact, Crocus partners with nursing, social work and occupational therapy students, offering valuable hands-on experience in mental health care. This collaboration helps train future professionals while combating the stigma surrounding mental illness.
By offering a welcoming space, employment opportunities and a sense of belonging, Crocus Co-op demonstrates the power of co-operative principles to foster inclusion, dignity and long-term well-being within the community.
