Understanding the basics
What is AI?
Artificial intelligence refers to machine based systems that can, for a given set of human defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations or decisions influencing real or virtual environments, with varying levels of autonomy. AI is transforming how we work and live and how services are delivered. It enables computers to do things that previously could only be done by humans, such as generating written or visual materials. It is increasingly being used in areas like finance, human resources and digital services.

The AI technologies that are being developed and used in Canada can help improve our quality of life and grow our economy. AI-driven tools are unlocking possibilities that were unthinkable a short time ago, such as:
- improving health care, including cancer screening, home care services and new drug treatments
- advancing precision agriculture, including technologies for managing, monitoring and harvesting crops
- creating more efficient global and domestic supply chains
- accelerating scientific discoveries
- developing new smart products, like autonomous vehicles, as well as personalized services
- enriching language processing technologies, including translation and text-to-speech tools
Canada's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All
In June 2026, the Government of Canada announced Canada's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All. Discover how this six-pillar strategy aims to help every Canadian benefit from the opportunities that come with AI, while also facing challenges head on. The information on this page will be updated as the new strategy is implemented.
Reflecting our values
Canada also plays a leading role on the world stage in ensuring that the use of AI reflects Canadian values, such as the protection of human rights and democracy.
In 2023, the Government of Canada launched the Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems. The code identifies measures that organizations are encouraged to apply to their operations when they are developing and managing general-purpose generative AI systems.
Canada is collaborating with like-minded international partners through its participation in the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI):
Canada and Germany also launched the Sovereign Technology Alliance to create a practical framework to expand bilateral cooperation in AI:
