Dear Business Partner:
I am writing to you as a beneficiary of public investment through Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada programs and a strategic partner for the Government of Canada in achieving our economic goals. As Canada faces an increasingly challenging trade reality, it is crucial that we collectively take action to strengthen Canadian industry's resilience. We are entering new territory, and this is a moment for all Canadians to support each other and find new solutions.
Last week, in response to the unfair and unjustified steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the United States as of March 12, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada began prioritizing funding of projects that use predominantly Canadian steel and aluminum. Now, I am writing to call on you to use Canadian inputs, especially Canadian steel and aluminum products, wherever relevant and possible, as your project develops.
Today, it is the steel and aluminum industries in Canada that are being targeted; tomorrow, it could be others. It is only by banding together now that we can protect Canadian industries and safeguard our economy. The Government of Canada's decision to invest in your project is testament to the value the Government saw in your project or ecosystem for the Canadian economy, Canadian workers, and Canadian consumers. Now, the expectation of Canadians is for all of us to do more.
Steel and aluminum represent the backbone of many of our manufacturing sectors, and they provide the materials needed for the critical infrastructure projects from which we all benefit. Taking steps to maintain this capacity is necessary to ensure our collective economic strength into the future.
I greatly appreciate your consideration of this request. This government remains committed to taking action to defend Canada and stand up for our workers and industries.
Yours sincerely,
The Honourable Anita Anand, P.C., M.P.
