Summary

This report discusses the rules and regulations governing financial consultants and how to protect the consumer in Québec against poor financial planners. The researchers contacted 36 individuals offering financial products or advice, and would pose uniformly as a recently employed single-parent, with no investments or debts, who had just inherited $50,000 but knew little about investing; from this angle, the researchers would evaluate the quality of service and the value of the financial guidance. The report recommends that consumers use vigilance when choosing financial advisers, and it also suggests that both industry and consumer associations take measures to ensure quality and reliability with regard to financial institutions.
