Monitoring Consumer Information on Environmental Labels and Claims

This project involved CAC volunteers across Canada who collected approximately 200 examples of environmental labels and claims on consumer products, which were then inputted into a database established by a similar project conducted previously by Consumers International. The results were analysed to determine whether they conformed to the ISO 14021 standard on self-declared environmental claims and declarations. The report concludes that the environmental claims and labels collected across Canada for the purposes of this project for the most part did not conform to the ISO 14021 requirements. The authors suggest that there is an ample opportunity for industry, government and consumer groups to work together to ensure environmental claims and symbols used in the Canadian marketplace are credible and not misleading.This document is available in the following language(s):
