This report studies the difficulties and pitfalls of developing and implementing a voluntary standard for labelling genetically modified foods in Canada. The document covers the commonly used expression "genetically modified", gives a brief overview of the consumer's position on the subject, and also outlines the regulations governing the labelling of genetically modified foods in the EU, Japan, Australia, NZ, the US and Canada. Option consommateurs makes several recommendations to the Government of Canada including: possibly creating mandatory labelling regulations, developing a mechanism to limit price increases due to labelling, and establishing a committee to monitor the application of the current voluntary standard.This document is available in the following language(s):
