Summary

Among the many changes in retail trade over the past
century is the relatively recent emergence and expansion
of big-box stores. This study determines what share of the
total chain-store market has been accounted for by bigbox
stores in recent years in terms of sales, floor space
and number of locations. It also compares the effectiveness
of big-box stores to other stores, using median sales per
square foot as an indicator.
