Summary

The wireless communications industry has experienced tremendous growth both internationally and in Canada since cellular telephone service was first introduced in the early 1980s. This report provides the first comprehensive statistical record of the Canadian cellular telephone industry’s development. The data, collected through a special survey of cellular service providers, quantify the growth and financial
performance of the industry since 1987. Following some background information on the cellular telephone industry, we analyze its development since 1987, including some comparisons with other communication industries and with other countries, examine the demographics of its users, and offer some assessment of the industry’s future.
