Summary

More and more consumers want both to be sure of a good return on their savings and to invest their money without betraying their values. The market for responsible investment, especially that for ethical mutual funds, offers consumers products which supposedly allow for attainment of both objectives. But how can consumers know that the fund in which they have invested is truly ethical? What are the values observed by investment funds that qualify them as being ethical? The reader will find in these pages first a presentation of the Canadian regulatory context, then an overview of regulatory frameworks elsewhere in the world. The study then reviews the forty ethical mutual funds available in Canada to see whether sufficient information is available to consumers on issues of social responsibility in this evolving market. The last part deals with shareholder activism.
