The principal objective of this research report is to evaluate the factors influencing the development of influence by consumers associations over decision makers within the Canadian federation. It is intended as a tool for Canadian associations that are currently passing through a period of fragility and searching for ways to improve their effectiveness with public, and to a lesser extent, private decision makers. Option consommateurs hopes that this report will be useful to the Canadian Consumer Initiative, a forum in which several Canadian associations participate. We examine the factors related to the processes of public policy development. To do so, we selected four qualitative items that permit us to identify certain trends. These items are: the importance attached to the participation of consumer associations, expectations with regard to this participation, the expertise and funding needed for the associations to participate. We also explored the opinions of the public regarding the roles and the expectations of consumers towards the associations.This document is available in the following language(s):
