Summary

In this project, the Union des consommateurs sought to understand what consumers think about the issue of genetic testing in relation to the purchase of insurance products that involve an assessment of medical risk, such as life and health insurance. The Union wanted to learn about the threats and opportunities consumers perceive in relation to the use of these new medical technologies in connection with insurance contracts. The Union’s goal was not to conduct exhaustive research into matters of genetics, but rather to canvass consumers’ perceptions about issues that are increasingly significant in fields such as insurance, and that will grow in significance in the years ahead. Admittedly, such an approach does not resolve anything, but should nevertheless offer food for thought to decision-makers and consumers alike.
