This study presents a portrait of the new consumer trends in the agrifood sector, with a view to identifying the information needs that they engender. The study examines the regulatory framework governing food labelling in North America, Europe and Australia/New Zealand. This is done using an analysis grid based on the standards and guidelines of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The study also endeavours, via a survey done with consumers, to identify 1) the likely determinants of consumer behaviour as regards purchasing decisions and 2) their emerging concerns in terms of food and dietary issues. The report concludes with a series of recommendations addressed to the Canadian governments, for a tightening of all labelling regarding, amongst others, organic farming, genetically modified organisms, fair trade products, geographic origin of foods and health claims.This document is available in the following language(s):
