Summary

The “Insurance Services on the Internet” project is being carried out in four steps. The first step consisted of identifying Internet sites that provide on-line insurance products and making sure that they complied with the principles of the Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce. The second step was to select a representative sample of the Internet sites, analyse them and prepare an evaluation grid based on their content. We then analysed Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan legislation for the offer and sale of insurance products on the Internet. We compared this legislation to the Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce. Lastly, based on the findings from the preceding steps, we made recommendations for the insurance industry, regulatory bodies and consumers.
