Summary

Against the backdrop of the development of the Fair Trade movement on the international stage Action réseau consommateur (ARC) identified and analysed current practices in the retail market of Fair Trade products in Canada. The study is documentary in nature and includes in-person and telephone interviews with the individuals and companies who are most involved in Fair Trade in this country. Most notably, ARC undertook an in-depth analysis of the specific Fair Trade claims being made by a sample of prominent coffee companies in Canada, as well as the practices that may or may not underlie such claims. ARC’s investigation of Fair Trade claims across Canada indicates that Fair Trade is growing at a rapid pace and that more and more companies are using Fair Trade claims to market their products.
