Summary

Science-Metrix has been mandated by the Office of Consumer Affairs to provide a bibliometric analysis, the objective of which is to assess the quantity and quality of Canadian academic work on consumer
issues research (CIR) and to compare Canada’s performance with that of other leading countries in this field. The performance of Canadian universities in CIR is also assessed. This bibliometric study
covers the period from 1996 to 2007 and is based on an assessment of research output published in peer-reviewed papers indexed in the Scopus database. One of the main challenges of this study involved defining the field of CIR and delimiting the core set of papers that would be used as a basis for measurement. The approach used to do so is described in Section 2 of this report, along with a discussion of the implications and limitations of the dataset. This is followed by a description of the indicators used to benchmark Canada’s performance in CIR against that of other productive countries in this field; the methods used to compile the statistics are presented at length in Section 2.3. Section 3 presents the results of the current study, and a conclusion and summary of the findings are discussed in Section 4.
