2021Summary
Over the past 30 years, fuel-inefficient light-duty trucks have become increasingly popular in North America and worldwide. The recent popularity of these vehicles is a concerning trend. Due to their size and poor fuel efficiency, light-duty trucks negatively impact traffic flow, road safety and the environment. This study explores why light-duty trucks have become so popular and if the trend can be reduced or reversed.
The study recommended that light-duty trucks be declared a public health and safety issue due to their environmental impact, road safety and capacity. Additional recommendations included tighter advertising guidelines regarding the fuel consumption of light-duty trucks, limits on vehicle financing options to stop the increasing rate of auto debt in Canada and more advertising dollars devoted to promoting the purchase of zero-emission vehicles.
